Around the Block

What can one expect to find in a single city block? Can one block alone give a fair representation of all a city has to offer? And in a city as diverse and unique as Amsterdam, what are those inherent qualities that one longs to expose? These were just the sorts of questions I asked myself as I made my way out onto the streets of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is an extraordinary city. It is steeped in history and yet somehow keeps from feeling antiquated. The past is everywhere you turn; yet this thriving metropolis seems to have its finger on the pulse of modernity. Though the old and the new are contradictory ideas, in this city one aspect does not seem to push the other out. Instead the city thrives on the balance between the two. It is this balance that makes the city so dynamic and exciting. When I was asked to do this assignment, find an interesting block in the city to write about, I knew I had to find the perfect place that embraces both aspects of the city. It did not take me long to realize I knew the perfect place!

Trying to decide what to do when visiting a new city can be a daunting task. You want to make sure to see and do all of the quintessential things that define a city. We at the Amsterdam Spoke thought who better to ask than the men and women whose jobs it is to know this information. It is a concierge’s job to enrich a guest’s visit by sharing their expertise of the city. And so to the concierges we went. We spoke with four hotels to find out their opinions of the essentials of Amsterdam, from what museums to see to what restaurants to dine in. Here is what they had to say…
